This awesome collection of nine short stories by Yale law student Adam Haslett was a 2002 finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Check the copyright page to see in which magazines some of these stories were first printed.

Here is an excerpt from the New York Times review: “Haslett possesses a rich assortment of literary gifts: an instinctive empathy for his characters and an ability to map their inner lives in startling detail; a knack for graceful, evocative prose; and a determination to trace the hidden arithmetic of relationships.”

The Library Journal says, “Courageous and compelling as any in today’s fiction, the despairing characters in these nine stories are all related to someone who has left or will leave them, usually owing to mental illness.”

Looking at the copyright page you will see that there is a full number line, (including the number 1) plus first edition is stated below the month and the year of publication. you-are-not-a-stranger-here-signature

Fine/fine signed first printings like this one now run up to as high as $115. Later first printings have a book club bug on the front cover — these are nowhere near as valuable as the earlier first printings without the bug. Be sure to ask about this if you are buying a copy on-line.

Haslett is an author to watch out for. His 2010 first novel Union Atlantic is also getting excellent reviews, including a starred review from Publishers Weekly. It won the 23rd Annual Lambda Literary Award for gay fiction.
