- This Is How
- M.J. Hyland
- Text Publishers, Australia, 2009
This is the true first edition of M.J. Hyland’s most recent novel. Text Publishing is a small Australian press, recently championed by Nobel laureate J.M. Coetzee. The Coetzee blurb on the back cover of This Is How (shown below right) is actually for Hyland’s earlier novel Carry Me Down.
For this novel, here are a couple of reviews I totally agree with: “A moving and compassionate portrait of a human being who is fully himself and yet stands for all of us, for what we fear, or fear to hope.” — New York Times Book Review; “Bleak yet moving, mercilessly dispassionate yet shot through with kindness and wit, This Is How is a profound achievement… it reminds us that there are some truths only fiction can carry.” — The Guardian.
This Is How was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
And yet you can find unsigned copies just like this one for about $80. In lesser condition they go as low as $30. There are no signed copies available, but signed copies of her two other novels top out at about $100.
By the way, all of Hyland’s true first editions are these paperback originals with French flaps.
I could be wrong, but I think the only hardcover first edition of any of her novels was the Canadian first edition of her first book How the Light Gets In, which I have previously posted. I have also posted the true first edition of Carry Me Down, so check them both out.
