Theft, another excellent novel by Australian Peter Carey, was nominated for most of the international literary prizes. It won two prestigious awards in Australia, and it received a coveted starred review from Publishers Weekly.

This first U.S. edition is in fine/fine condition. It is signed, placed in New York City, Carey’s home since the early 1990′s, and dated very shortly after the book’s release.

theft-front_-cover_ These are all features that will put a book near the top of its range of values. Unfortunately, for this edition of book the top of the range is only about fifty dollars.

The true first edition is the Knopf Australia publication, which preceded the American and Canadian Knopf editions, as well as the British Faber and Faber edition. theft-copy_

The cover art for all the Knopf first printings is the same as shown here, while the British Faber and Faber edition is quite different.

A true first Australian edition in the same condition would be about five to ten times more costly, though the lag time for distribution of this book to the rest of the English-speaking world was negligible.

I actually would have thought that the American edition would be closer in value to the Australian, being that Carey has lived and taught in New York for nearly two decades. Oh well, live and learn….
