- The Savage Detectives — ARC + reading copy
- Roberto Bolano
- Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, New York, 2007
Since I posted the British first edition on New Year’s Eve, I thought, for comparison’s sake, I would hurry up and showcase the U.S. edition — in this case, an advance readers copy and an 8th printing paperback. My reasoning? Fun mostly. You see, The Savage Detectives takes place over Christmas and New Year, 1975/76.
The Farrar, Strauss and Giroux first is the true first edition.
The cover art is much different than the British first, which shows the rear end of a Chevy Impala against a map of Mexico.
On the proof copy (top photos), advance reader’s copy is noted on the bottom of the front cover, whereas the 8th printing paperback (below) has a New York Times Book Review Ten Best bug at the top and a blurb from the San Francisco Chronicle at the bottom.
The back covers are quite different also, as you can see in the photos.
The review copy here is in near fine condition with just the lightest bumping to a couple of corners. The reading copy, with bumped corners, a careful tape reinforcement along the spine, and light tanning to the page edges, I would rate in good condition.
I notice, each time I look at these advance readers editions on-line, that there are less and less of them available. Today there are only five copies for sale. The more scarce these become, the more valuable.
