- the curious incident of the dog in the night-time
- Mark Haddon
- Doubleday, Canada, 2002
This is the Canadian first edition of Haddon’s wildly successful debut novel. The year of publication listed on the copyright page is 2002, a year before it came out in Haddon’s native England. That makes this the true first edition, although the 2003 Jonathan Cape (British) edition is much more valuable.
This is a detective novel, told from the perspective of a boy detective with Asperger’s syndrome. The boy, Christopher, is an expert in math, and one of the fun features of this novel is that the chapters are numbered with prime, not consecutive, numbers.
These North American first editions are popular because of their fun fluorescent pink cover art. I have featured the British first edition in another post. Check it out to see the difference in the cover art.
This copy is in fine/very good condition. The only flaw with the dust jacket is that it has just a hint of colour chipping, a very common problem with this edition.
There are two of these Canadian firsts listed on AbeBooks right now, both in fine condition, both from reliable sellers. One is signed. The unsigned copy is about $65 and the signed one is $115 dollars. The Jonathan Cape first edition tops out at $675.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time won the 2003 Whitbread Award, which is now known as the Costa Award. It also won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize for best first novel.
