Hello and welcome to this book is collectible, a website for book collectors; more specifically for collectors of modern fictional literature. There will be an emphasis on signed first editions, Canadian literature, and LGBT literature, but you can expect to see a wide range of collectible books here.
Because there are as many different collections as there are collectors, it would be impossible to cover everything. So, what I am going to do is showcase books from my own collection.
Let’s face it, rich or poor, genetically predisposed collectors like ourselves usually want what we have bought to be worth more than what we paid. Sure, like most of you, I have occasionally felt compelled to bite the bullet and overspend to get that must-have rare edition. But generally, I admit it, I look for the best price I can find, always keeping in mind, of course, the reliability of the seller and the condition of the book.
Prices I mention should be taken as current only to the day the post was written, so try to get into the habit of looking up prices on-line yourself. With today’s smart phones and tablets you can look up prices instantly; anytime, anywhere. I usually check BookFinder.com and AbeBooks.com first, but there are many other collectible book websites out there as well. You may well find another site that suits you better. Please note that while I do mention prices, the books on my site are not for sale.
There are plenty of factors that can affect the value of a book: the economy, the rise and fall in popularity of the author, whether or not a book can actually stand the test of time — just to name a few. Be aware that it is impossible to put a firm price on something with so many shifting variables to take into consideration. Also remember, prices do not always rise.
Having said all that, the idea for a lot of book collectors (but certainly not all of us) is to collect books that we see rising in value over a span of time, and what that really boils down to is a careful balance of informed decision making and luck.
Just to be clear, this is not a review site. While I reserve the right to throw in the odd glowing review that reflects my opinion, there are plenty of other sites out there that are dedicated to book reviews. And besides, my feeling is that if you have collected the book, chances are pretty good that you don’t need to be convinced to read and enjoy it.
This site is about collectibility.
I now have nearly 300 books listed, with lots more to come!
Like many of you, I collect more than just books. In fact, I have several collections, including vintage toasters, watches, and pens. Lately, just to shake things up a little, I have included a few posts about collectible pens in among the book posts. After all, where would writers be without pens?
