- Brokeback Mountain
- Annie Proulx
- Fourth Estate, U.K. 1998
This Fourth Estate edition came out in 1998, less than a year after the story first appeared in the New Yorker magazine. In 1999 it was included in Proulx’s short story collection Close Range – Wyoming Stories.
This is a nice, collectible edition. It is a well-made paperback with French flaps in near fine condition. It is signed in Proulx’s neat and tiny signature on the title page.
As most of you know, the number 1 on the copyright page signifies that this is a first printing. This book quickly went into multiple print runs, so first printings are actually quite rare. Expect to pay between two and four hundred dollars for a signed copy, depending on the condition.
Proulx announced after Brokeback Mountain came out that she was retiring from writing. She had, however, announced her retirement before, and to the delight of her fans, she has since written two more novels. Her most recent is the epic Barkskins, which just came out in June, 2016.
First editions of her earlier work are becoming hard to find and extremely valuable. Currently, for example, there is a signed true first of The Shipping News on AbeBooks for just shy of $2,000.
